Step by step, adding games to your retro handheld

With this guide, you put ROM files on your Miyoo Mini Plus and make sure they show up in OnionOS.

Only use ROMs you have the right to use. For homebrew and independent games, you could for example itch.io have a look at.

Preparation: charge safely

Preferably charge your Miyoo Mini Plus with the supplied cable and a PC or other standard USB port. Rather not use a fast charger for this retro device.

Step 1: put the SD card in your computer

  • Carefully remove the SD card from your Miyoo Mini Plus.

  • Use an SD card adapter if your computer does not have a built-in card reader.

  • Put the SD card in the card reader and open it in File Explorer.

Step 2: preparing ROMs

ROMs are often supplied as a ZIP file. Unpack such a file with, for example, 7-Zip:

  1. Right-click the ZIP file.

  2. Choose 7-Zip and then Extract to….

  3. Select a destination for the extracted files.

Step 3: put ROMs on the SD card

Open the folder Roms on the SD card. Copy the extracted files to the correct system folder, for example:

  • GB for Game Boy ROMs

  • GBA for Game Boy Advance ROMs

  • FC for NES ROMs

  • SFC for SNES ROMs

Other systems use their own folder name. After that, put the SD card back into your Miyoo Mini Plus.

Refreshing the game list

Still don't see the games in the menu? Turn on your Miyoo Mini Plus and, on the home screen, press the Select button. Then confirm refreshing the ROM list.

Troubleshooting

If the ROMs are still not recognised, you can rebuild the database:

  • On the SD card, open the folder where the missing ROMs are.

  • Delete the matching .db file, for example cache.db.

  • Using a scraper? Then delete the matching .xml files as well.

  • Restart the Miyoo Mini Plus and refresh the ROM list once more.

Activating extra systems in OnionOS

You can activate extra systems via Apps > Package Manager on your Miyoo Mini Plus. Enable the systems you want and press the Start button twice to save the settings. OnionOS will then create the corresponding extra folders in the Roms folder.
